What it's about

In his second year of fighting crime, Batman uncovers corruption in Gotham City that connects to his own family while facing a serial killer known as the Riddler.

Why 13

The official rating, firstRated PG-13 in the US (parents strongly cautioned, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
A serial killer, not a supervillainThe mayor is beaten to death in his living room, his face wrapped in tape, and you find him in the first fifteen minutes; the police commissioner is killed, his thumb cut off while he was alive; the district attorney has a bomb locked around his neck that goes off on live television; the mob boss is shot at a window by an unseen sniper; a mail bomb puts the butler in the hospital. The murders are staged as riddles, with cards and clues, which makes them gripping rather than unbearable, but the blood is there, in close-up, for half a minute at a stretch.
Anonymous shooters recruited onlineThe killer has followers who film themselves, wear his mask and open fire on a crowd in a flooded arena. The film shows lonely men radicalized behind a screen, and that is the part that speaks most to a teenager today.
Three hours of nightMore than four images out of five are below the darkness threshold, it rains, the corridors are dim, whispers and a low score keep the tension up for the whole film. Batman hits hard and long with his bare hands, and takes it too. It is not jump-scare fear, it is a constant weight.
Language, drugs, and the restFrequent swearing in the original version, less in the French dub; a drug is at the center of the plot, named, never shown; cigarettes, drinks in a club. One kiss, a glimpse of nudity from behind, nothing explicit.

What the movie brings

A hero who learns that vengeance is not a plan, and who ends the film as a rescuer holding a flare rather than an avenger in the shadows.
A real investigation you can follow by thinking: the riddles, the clues, the lies of a city, and the pleasure of understanding before the characters do.
A portrait of online radicalization at a teenager's level: the killer is not a monster, he is a lonely man that screens have armed.

Watching it together

Before

Warn them that the film is long and dark, that the murders are discovered like riddles, and that you will talk afterwards: about vengeance, and about what a lonely man does in front of a screen that tells him he is right.

After

at 13 and up

The Riddler says Batman showed him the way: how is he right, and at what moment does Batman prove him wrong?
