What it's about
After being bitten by a genetically altered spider at Oscorp, nerdy but endearing high school student Peter Parker is endowed with amazing powers to become the superhero known as Spider-Man.

- A death that hits homeA beloved family member is killed, and the loss is not brushed aside: it drives the whole second half. Death is named again and again in the dialogue, and bodies are shown. For a child who has lost someone, this lands hard.
- Blood and injuries, up closeFights leave real marks: wounded faces, blood on skin and on the floor, and one long stretch where the camera stays on the damage. It is not gore, but it is insistent enough that younger viewers look away.
- A villain built to frightenThe Green Goblin is the scariest part of the film: a masked, cackling figure, a split mind that talks to itself in a mirror, screaming crowds, a disfigured face. Several long stretches play in the dark with music designed to tighten the chest.
- Explosions, guns, hostagesGunfire is heard through several scenes, knives and pistols are held, fires and blasts tear through public places, and innocent people, including children, are deliberately put in danger to force the hero's hand.
- Words, smoke, and a first loveThe insults are schoolyard grade, freak, creep, loser, along with a handful of mild swear words. Adults smoke and drink in the background. The romance stays at kisses, but there is a brief alley scene where a young woman is grabbed by drunk men and has to fight them off before help arrives.
What the movie brings
- A clear, well told lesson about responsibility: what you are able to do creates a duty toward others.
- A hero who is bullied, awkward and poor, and who wins by character rather than by strength.
- A real conversation about guilt, about the choice not to act and what it can cost.
Watching it together
You could say before it starts that the man in the green mask is the frightening part, and that he is a scientist who poisoned his own mind, not a monster from nowhere.
