What it's about

All unemployed, Ki-taek's family takes peculiar interest in the wealthy and glamorous Parks for their livelihood until they get entangled in an unexpected incident.

The last quarter turnsFor an hour and a half the film is a tense comedy. Then it changes shape: a knife attack in broad daylight, during a child's birthday party. You see a man with his face and shirt drenched in blood, a bloodied hand raised, bodies lying on the grass, in close-up with no discreet cut away. That turn is what sets the age.
Violence that builds without warningBefore that there are already scuffles, a cellar, threats, weapons held in hand. The film lets the calm run long and then strikes at once: the jolts are rare but hard, and the tension is built in the sound more than the picture.
Adult language throughoutMore than forty swear words across just over two hours, in the dub as in the original. They carry exhaustion and class contempt as much as anger.
Drink as the backdropThere is a great deal of drinking, wine is everywhere on screen, and one of the most important scenes plays out among drunk people in a living room that is not theirs. Drugs come up more than once.
Children in the middle of itA small boy sees things the adults are hiding from him, and the hardest scene unfolds in front of him, at his own birthday party. Crying is heard more than once.
