What it's about

Five days before the massacre at Oradour-sur-Glane, Philippe Gerbier, an officer in the Free French Forces, is parachuted in near the village. He is to lead a mission for the Resistance in preparation for the D-Day landings. There, he is reunited with Marie, his childhood sweetheart.

Why 12

A real massacre, at the centerThe story moves toward one of the worst killings of civilians in occupied France, and the film does not soften it. Deaths are spoken of again and again, gunfire runs long over the images, fire and destruction fill several sequences, and blood stays on screen in a sustained way rather than in a quick flash. Wounded and bleeding people appear repeatedly.

Cruelty spoken, and feltBeyond the battle scenes, the dialogue carries mistreatment and threat: characters are put in danger, humiliated, cornered by a violent husband. It is the kind of pressure a younger viewer feels in the stomach long after the scene ends.
