What it's about

New York City, 1957. Lionel Essrog, a private detective living with Tourette syndrome, tries to solve the murder of his mentor and best friend, armed only with vague clues and the strength of his obsessive mind.

Why 17

The official rating, firstRated R in the US (restricted, under 17 requires an accompanying parent). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
A mentor shot, a detective who blurts things outThe hero's only friend is killed in the first minutes, and Lionel, who has Tourette's syndrome, investigates while shouting words he cannot control, including profanities and obscenities. A hundred and sixty swear words.
A few shootouts, blood at timesHenchmen who beat, two or three shootouts, a body pulled from the river; blood fills the centre of the frame for some forty seconds in all.
New York in the fiftiesCigarettes everywhere, smoky bars, a story of housing torn down over the poor; the film is long and slow, which is the real limit for younger viewers.

What the movie brings

A hero whose disability is also his tool: his perfect memory solves what his tic cannot hide.
How whole neighbourhoods were razed for highways: a true story behind the noir.
A classic film noir, slow and beautiful, for a teenager who loves investigations.

Watching it together

Before

Explain Tourette's syndrome beforehand, otherwise Lionel's outbursts get laughs at the wrong moments.

After

at 17 and up

Lionel cannot help saying what he thinks: does it help his investigation?
