What it's about
After an abrupt and violent encounter with a French warship inflicts severe damage upon his ship, a captain of the British Royal Navy begins a chase over two oceans to capture or destroy the enemy, though he must weigh his commitment to duty and ferocious pursuit of glory against the safety of his devoted crew, including the ship's thoughtful surgeon, his best friend.

What the movie brings
- A rare portrait of leadership: a captain who must weigh duty, pride, and the lives of his men, and who does not always get it right.
- The friendship between the captain and the ship's doctor, a naturalist, shows that curiosity and courage can live side by side. The Galapagos scenes are a small gift of wonder in the middle of a war.
- A vivid, careful picture of how people actually lived and worked at sea two hundred years ago.
Watching it together
You might say beforehand that this is a war story told from inside the ship, so the injuries are shown honestly rather than dressed up, and that the doctor's work is meant to look difficult, not thrilling.
