What it's about

Paul, is an ordinary man who divides his life between his shipbuilding company, his wife Elise and their daughter Mia. During a sea trip, Paul finds himself confronted with a strange, unexplained meteorological phenomenon. From then on, Paul shrinks inexorably, without science being able to explain why or be of any help to him. When, by accident, he finds himself a prisoner in his own cellar, and while he is only a few centimeters tall, he will have to fight to survive in this banal environment that has become perilous. During this experience, Paul will find himself confronted with himself, with his humanity, and will try to answer the great questions of existence.

Why 12

Blood, seen up closeWounds and blood are shown plainly, sometimes filling the screen for a long stretch, and there are lifeless bodies on view. It is not gory for the sake of it, but it lingers long enough to sit with a younger child.
A long stretch of darknessMore than half the film takes place in near total darkness, with long stretches where a tiny man is alone, unheard, unable to reach anyone. That trapped feeling, more than any single image, is what makes the film heavy.
Fire, knives, screamsBlades appear in hand, a fire spreads late in the film, and there are faces screaming in fear and shapes glimpsed in the shadows that read as creatures. Nothing is played for shock, but the danger is constant and physical.
Death spoken of, and feltDeath is named several times in conversation, and crying is heard at a few key moments. A child who has lost someone may find those scenes closer to home than expected.
Wine at the table, a cigaretteWine is poured and drunk in ordinary family scenes, and a character smokes on a couple of occasions. Nothing is glamorized, it is simply part of adult life here.

What the movie brings

It shows an ordinary man refusing to give up when nothing can be explained or fixed.
It turns a familiar cellar into a vast world, which is a beautiful lesson in point of view.
