What it's about
A wealthy entrepreneur secretly creates a theme park featuring living dinosaurs drawn from prehistoric DNA. Before opening day, he invites a team of experts and his two eager grandchildren to experience the park and help calm anxious investors. However, the park is anything but amusing as the security systems go off-line and the dinosaurs escape.
Why 13

- Dinosaurs that hunt peopleThe dinosaurs are not friendly here. They stalk, roar in the dark, and corner the characters, and the film keeps that pressure going for long stretches: growling just out of sight, screaming, silence, then an attack. Several of the most frightening sequences involve the two children being hunted, alone, in the dark.
- Blood and injuries you seePeople are killed by the animals, and the film does not cut away as much as its adventure label suggests. There is blood on the ground and on walls, wounded and dying characters, including one long, close, hard to watch scene of a badly hurt man. Roughly ten to fifteen minutes in, a worker is dragged off screen, which sets the tone.
- Long stretches in the darkA quarter of the film plays out at night, in a storm or in unlit buildings, with the music dropping to nothing before something happens. If your child is sensitive to darkness and to sudden loud noises, this is where it will land hardest.
- Guns, panic, swearingAdults grab rifles, shots are fired, and the characters swear when things go wrong: about a dozen mild curses, a few insults, some drinking and a cigarette. None of it is shocking on its own, but it adds to the grown up feel of the second half.

- A real appetite for science: fossils, DNA, how life finds a way, and the question of whether we should do everything we can do.
- Two children who stay clever and useful under pressure instead of waiting to be rescued.
- One of the great examples of how a film builds suspense with sound, silence and what it refuses to show.
Watching it together
Before you start, say plainly that the dinosaurs in this one are predators and that people do get killed, so nobody is caught off guard by the kitchen or the storm.
