The codes, for parents

A dark, spectacular Japanese animated series in which a good hearted high schooler swallows a piece of an ancient demon and enrolls in a secret school for sorcerers who exorcise the monsters born from human suffering.

The lexicon

• Curses (jujutsu / cursed spirits)Monsters born from the negative feelings people give off every day: fear, regret, humiliation, resentment. They are invisible to most people, which is why ordinary victims never understand what is happening to them.
• Cursed energyThe fuel of the whole series. Everyone produces it through negative emotion, but only a few people can control it and turn it into attacks, defenses or healing.
• Jujutsu sorcererA trained fighter who can see and exorcise Curses. It is treated as a dangerous job with rankings, missions and paperwork, not as a fantasy privilege.
• Jujutsu High (Tokyo Jujutsu High)The hidden school where Yuji, Megumi and Nobara train. There is a sister school in Kyoto, and the rivalry between the two campuses drives several arcs.
• SukunaThe King of Curses, an ancient being sealed into twenty fingers. Yuji swallowed one of them, so Sukuna now lives inside him and speaks through him.
• Cursed techniqueEach sorcerer's personal, inborn ability, a bit like a fingerprint: shadows, hammers, straw dolls, and so on. The rules of each technique are strict, and the fights are largely about outsmarting those rules.
• Domain ExpansionA sorcerer's ultimate move: they unfold a private world around the enemy where their own technique cannot miss. It costs enormous energy and is treated as a rare, serious escalation.
• Binding vowA contract a character makes with themselves or with someone else: accept a restriction, gain power in exchange. Breaking it has consequences, which makes promises in this world genuinely binding.
• Satoru GojoThe teacher of the main trio, the strongest sorcerer alive, playful and infuriating with authority figures. Your teen almost certainly quotes him.
• Special GradeThe top classification for both sorcerers and Curses, meaning "too dangerous for a normal team." Hearing it is the show's way of warning that the stakes just jumped.
• ShibuyaA real, crowded Tokyo neighborhood that becomes the setting of the series' longest and darkest arc. When your teen says "Shibuya," they mean that storyline, not the place.
• Culling GameA large scale contest introduced later, in which players are enclosed in marked zones with strict rules and point systems. It shifts the series from missions toward strategy and survival.
• The Zenin, Gojo and Kamo clansThe three old sorcerer families who hold most of the political power. Much of the drama comes from young characters resisting family tradition and inherited status.

How the world works

Curses grow out of ordinary human negativity, so crowded cities and schools are the most dangerous places, and the more people suffer in one spot, the worse the monster that appears there. Regular people cannot see Curses; sorcerers work in secret under a conservative governing body of elders whose decisions the young heroes often find unjust. Only cursed energy can exorcise a Curse, which is why sorcerers, and Yuji in particular, live in an uncomfortable in between. Power follows rules: each technique has limits, and clever use of those limits beats raw strength more often than in most action shows. The tone shifts by arc, from school comedy and training to grim, high stakes missions with real consequences for adults and teenagers alike.

The references

• Weekly Shonen Jump battle manga, the tradition of Naruto, Bleach and Hunter x Hunter, from which the series takes its trio of students, ranked exams and rule based powers.
• Japanese yokai and onmyoji folklore, where specialists ward off spirits with seals, chants and hand signs, reworked here into a modern profession.
• The legend of Ryomen Sukuna, a two faced figure from old Japanese chronicles, reused as the name and shape of the being inside Yuji.
• Contemporary Tokyo itself, especially Shibuya and its famous crossing, filmed almost documentary style before the supernatural breaks in.
• Horror cinema and body horror imagery in the design of the Curses, closer to a scary movie than to standard anime monsters.
• The animation studio MAPPA's showy, camera moving fight choreography, which is a large part of why the series went viral online.

Why your teen loves it

• Your teen recognizes the pressure Yuji feels, an ordinary kid suddenly asked to carry something enormous while adults argue about the rules.
• The fights reward attention: your teen enjoys decoding how each power works and debating matchups with friends online.
• The friendships and the humor between missions give the darkness a warm center, and the characters' loyalty to each other is what most fans say they love.

• The show says Curses come from people's negative feelings, do you think that idea works?
