What it's about
Teens Charlie and Nick discover their unlikely friendship might be something more as they navigate school and young love.
Why 14

- An eating disorder told from the inside (season 3)Charlie stops eating, hides it, then says the words: anorexia and OCD, rules in his head that forbid eating, past self-harm and a relapse, months in an inpatient clinic. Nothing is shown, everything is said, in the words of a sixteen-year-old and of his boyfriend of the same age, who learns that love cannot cure a mental illness. In season 1, one line not to let slide: it would be better if I didn't exist.
- Homophobic and transphobic bullying, in wordsLocker-room slurs, an older brother sneering at his little brother's coming out, a mother who says her daughter looks like a lesbian, a radio host turning a young trans artist into a debate topic. A manipulative ex kisses without asking, and is later told he took whatever he wanted. One fight, one punch over a slur.
- First love, first times (season 3)Kisses, a hickey that goes round the school trip, a sex-ed class with cucumbers and condoms, parties with alcohol that end in vomiting, and, at sixteen, a first night together, suggested, asked for and consented to, with no nudity. A young trans woman names her dysphoria when her boyfriend touches her, and he listens.
What the series brings
- A group of friends where everyone finds a word for themselves: gay, bi, lesbian, trans, nonbinary, asexual and aromantic, with no lecture
- Asking before touching, saying when things are not okay: consent and mental health as everyday subjects
- A first love filmed with hand-drawn leaves and sparks, gentle even in the hard moments
Watching it together
Seasons 1 and 2 can be watched early; season 3 is one to watch with you or after talking about it: anorexia and self-harm are named plainly, and the series shows how someone close can help without playing doctor.
