What it's about
John Garrity, his estranged wife and their young son embark on a perilous journey to find sanctuary as a planet-killing comet hurtles toward Earth. Amid terrifying accounts of cities getting levelled, the Garritys experience the best and worst in humanity. As the countdown to the global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.

- Blood and injuries, up closeWounds are shown plainly and blood stays on screen for long stretches rather than passing in a flash, including one extended sequence past the halfway mark. Bodies are glimpsed after a deadly moment. It is the single heaviest element of the film.
- Panic, guns and crowdsOnce the evacuation begins, ordinary people turn dangerous: gunfire is heard at length, weapons and a knife are handled, and there are repeated scuffles and fights. A stretch in the middle involves a family being threatened and coerced, which is more frightening than any of the explosions.
- A child separated from his parentsThe heart of the tension is a boy on his own in the dark and the fear of losing him. For children who worry about being separated from you, this lands harder than the comet itself.
- Dark, loud, relentlessMore than half the film plays in darkness, cut very fast, with screaming faces, fires and explosions and a couple of sudden loud jolts. Nearly two hours at that pace is tiring for a younger viewer even without the story.
- Swearing under pressureAdults curse regularly when things go wrong, roughly thirty times across the film, mostly the everyday words. Nothing crude or demeaning, just the language of people who are terrified.
- Drinking and smoking in the backgroundWine and beer appear at a neighborhood gathering and later, and several characters smoke. It is scenery rather than a subject, but it is present throughout.
What the movie brings
- A clear, warm answer to a hard question: when you cannot save everything, you protect the people in front of you.
- It shows a separated couple choosing to act as a team again, which is worth something for kids who know that situation.
- It ends on hope, not on ruin, and the panic of strangers is set against real acts of kindness.
Watching it together
Before you start, you might say that the danger here is not really the comet, it is how frightened people behave, and that the family does find each other again.
