What it's about
Six young people from New York City, on their own and struggling to survive in the real world, find the companionship, comfort and support they get from each other to be the perfect antidote to the pressures of life.

- Bedroom stories in nearly every episodeThe six friends talk about their nights, their exes, who is seeing whom, and much of the comedy comes from there. Nothing is shown beyond a kiss or a couple under the covers: at 11 a child is not shocked, misses half of it and laughs at something else. The show really lands later, once a teenager starts picturing a young adult's life of their own.
- Coffee, beer and cigarettes as the backdropThey drink at Central Perk and in Monica's kitchen, alcohol drives some of the jokes (the drunken night, the morning after), and Chandler goes back to smoking for an episode. Never glamorized, always around.

What the series brings
- A group that chooses each other and holds: six friends who become a family, from failed dates to improvised Thanksgivings.
- Comedy built on the line: Chandler's timing, the misunderstandings, humor that lives on words and play rather than humiliation.
- Serious subjects under the laughs: from season one, Ross's ex-wife lives with a woman and the three of them raise his son; later a surrogate pregnancy, an adoption, parents who split up. For a 1994 sitcom that took nerve, and the show never turns it into a drama.
