What it's about

A man with a low IQ has accomplished great things in his life and been present during significant historic events, in each case, far exceeding what anyone imagined he could do. But despite all he has achieved, his one true love eludes him.

Vietnam, and what it leaves behindThe jungle ambush is a real war scene: gunfire, napalm, wounded men carried out, a friend dying in Forrest's arms, a lieutenant who loses both legs and meets him again in a hospital bed. Blood is shown, briefly but clearly.
What happens to JennyThe film suggests, without showing it, what her father does to her as a child; as an adult she goes through drugs, men who hit her, and a balcony she thinks of jumping from. A ten-year-old will not understand all of it, and that is precisely what worries.
Sex, spoken about franklyOne sex scene off screen, another begun under the sheets, a girl undressing on stage, and barracks jokes. Nothing explicit, but the film does not look away.
Words and tauntsAround seventy swear words, and above all insults about Forrest's intelligence, including terms nobody uses any more. Cigarettes and drink everywhere, as in the America of those years.
The losses, at the endSeveral people Forrest loves die over the course of the film, and the last hour is a string of goodbyes. Sad without being hopeless; better to know.
