Alone, or with you
The official US rating is TV-14, and we never go below it. Alone from 14, and not before, even with an adult.
The sweet spot: around 15-17, when the question of justice without a judge becomes a real debate, not a game. Why a sweet spot?
Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects, and he’s bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But will Light succeed in his noble goal, or will the Death Note turn him into the very thing he fights against?
A brilliant high-school student picks up a notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it, decides to wipe out every criminal on the planet, and an anonymous detective sets out to catch him.
Nobody is a hero. The protagonist is a mass murderer who believes himself just, and his opponent uses methods the law forbids: the series asks the viewer to choose, and makes the choice uncomfortable. There is almost no on-screen violence: people collapse, no wound is shown. What lands is the coldness and the scale. The story reads like a chess game, with traps laid several episodes ahead; you have to keep up, and many young viewers rewatch episodes to follow the moves.
Watch the first episode together: it is all there, the notebook, Ryuk, the first death and "I will become the god of this new world"; if your teenager only finds that cool, there is a conversation to have.
