What it's about

At an elite, old-fashioned boarding school in New England, a passionate English teacher inspires his students to rebel against convention and seize the potential of every day, courting the disdain of the stern headmaster.

A teenager's suicideThe film contains the suicide of a student, off screen: one night, a gun in the father's study, a shot you barely hear, then the parents finding him and screaming. Everything before is quiet paternal pressure, and everything after is the friends' grief and the search for someone to blame.
A father who crushesNeil's father decides his life, forbids the theater, enrolls him in military school; Todd gets the same birthday present as last year. These are violences without blows, and teenagers recognize them.
Punishments and expulsionA student is paddled by the headmaster for a prank, another is expelled, and the others are forced to sign a letter accusing their teacher. Cigarettes, a pipe and alcohol in the cave, some swearing.
A clumsy first loveKnox kisses a sleeping girl at a boozy party, gets beaten by her boyfriend, then wins her with a poem: a stolen kiss the film presents as romantic, worth discussing today.
