The official US rating is R, and we never go below it. Alone from 17, and not before, even with an adult.

The sweet spot: around 17, when you can follow a slow film in the rain and wonder whether a machine afraid of dying is still a machine. Why a sweet spot?

Official US rating: R. In France, zinema would say 15.

What it's about

In the smog-choked dystopian Los Angeles of 2019, blade runner Rick Deckard is called out of retirement to terminate a quartet of replicants who have escaped to Earth seeking their creator for a way to extend their short life spans.

Why 17

The official rating, firstRated R in the US (restricted, under 17 requires an accompanying parent). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
Close-up deathsA woman shot in the back through shop windows, in slow motion and blood; a man killed with a bullet to the head; a creator whose eyes are crushed with thumbs; a nail driven through a hand. Few scenes, but each held for a long time.
A kiss under duressDeckard blocks the door, holds Rachael and dictates the words she must say before kissing her; nothing shown, but a scene worth discussing. A woman in a transparent raincoat, a few seconds.
A night city, slow and anxiousHalf the film in darkness and rain, screaming faces, a tension that never lets go; a slow film that asks for attention more than nerves.

What the movie brings

The question asked without an answer: how do you recognise a human being, when machines cry too?
Roy Batty's final monologue, one of the most quoted in cinema.
The Los Angeles of 1982 imagining 2019: all later science fiction comes from it.

Watching it together

Before

Tyrell's death and Zhora's are the two moments to warn about; the rest is slowness and rain, better with a teenager who accepts a film that takes its time.

After

at 17 and up

Roy saves Deckard as he is dying: why spare the one who hunts you?
