Why 13

The official rating, firstRated PG-13 in the US (parents strongly cautioned, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
An execution in front of a crowdThe film opens on trials where the crowd demands death and gets it: a man is shot on stage while begging, then the heroine's terrified brother awaits his turn. Vengeful justice is shown so it can be refused, but the scene is head-on.
shown
Children taken from their parentsBeyond the wall, a mission presented as humanitarian gasses families to carry off the children and erase their memories. A little boy cries for his father. It is the most disturbing stretch of the film, and it sits at the center of the story.
shown
Blood and gunfireA friend is shot dead during the escape, wounds bleed on screen, ships crash, and a long chase plays out under fire. Blood is visible but never indulgent.
shown
Erasing a whole city's memoryA gas that makes everyone forget threatens the entire city, and a son begs his mother not to use it on him. The fear here is losing the people you love while staying alive.

What the movie brings

Doubting those who tell you that you are worth more than others.
Going home to repair rather than running away.

Watching it together

Before

Warn that the film opens with a public execution and that the scene of the stolen children is hard; both deserve a word afterward.

After

at 13 and up

The people outside sort humans into the pure and the damaged. Does that remind you of anything in real life?
