What it's about

At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers.

Wounds and blood, up closeThe camera does not look away from what war does to bodies. There are long stretches where blood and injured men fill the frame, including corpses left where they fell, and the film lingers rather than cutting quickly. This is the main reason younger viewers should wait.

Constant danger, almost no reliefThe whole film is one long push forward under threat: gunfire heard close by, explosions, fire, hand to hand struggle, men caught in collapsing places. Because the story is told in what feels like one unbroken shot, there is no pause to catch a breath, and that steady pressure is more tiring for a child than any single image.
