How zinema makes money

Short version: never from you. The long version fits on one page.

The principle

zinema is free for viewers, always. The people who pay are the ones with something to show: rights holders, distributors, independent filmmakers, event producers. They pay to put their trailer in front of the right eyes. You never pay, and your data is never the product.

Everything here is already an ad

zinema only shows trailers, which is to say: advertising for films and shows. That is the whole point of the product. So the honest question is never "is this an ad?" It is "who chose to show it to me?"

Almost always, the answer is the engine, based on your watch trajectory. Sometimes, the answer is a distributor or an independent who paid for the spot. When that happens, the film's info panel says so, right next to the button you would use to act on it.

The rules that do not bend

  • Sponsors buy exposure, never relevance. A paid trailer only appears if it matches your taste trajectory anyway. If it is not for you, you will not see it, paid or not.
  • The ranking is not for sale. No one can pay to rank higher in your feed. Paid placement is a separate, capped slot on top of the organic feed, never a thumb on the engine.
  • Your data is not for sale. It builds your recommendations. That is its only job. Privacy policy.
  • No demographic targeting. Advertisers cannot buy categories of people: no age, no gender, no profile segments, unlike social networks. The engine places trailers by watch trajectory, nothing else.
  • No TV-style ads, ever. Anything paid is still a trailer for something you can go watch: a film, a series, a show, a concert, an opera. If it is not a trailer, it does not get in.

Outbound links

Some "where to watch" links may become affiliate links: if you subscribe to a platform through one, zinema may earn a commission. The price for you never changes, and affiliation never influences which films the engine recommends.

You have something to show?

If you distribute films, produce documentaries, or put shows on stage: submit your trailer. Taste-matched exposure, human review, honest reporting. Pilot program, free.
